Sandow Birk is an American artist from Southern California. Known for novelty, he scrambles high and low art by updating genres like European historical painting with an urban graphic sensibility. His work tends to explore narrative of social and political weight. He implores visual metaphor as a way to help make these issues more accessible to American culture and life. His work has been a magnet for public debate, if not at times inducing outright controversy. He gave a visiting artist's talk at BCA autumn 2011
Nationally and internationally exhibited and collected, his is represented by the Koplin del Rio Gallery, Los Angeles, P.P.O.W Gallery in New York City and the Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco.
