BallyvaughanBallyvaughan, just 2km from the College is a lively coastal village with excellent restaurants, craft shops and music-filled pubs, which has a thriving community spirit. The village hosts numerous literary, geological, archaeological and botanical workshops and conferences, attracting international delegates. This small village has a cosmopolitan population, which includes numerous artists, writers and musicians, the area having attracted such creative people since the times of WB Yeats, who lived nearby. There are numerous places to eat out or socialise locally, a number of them being pubs or bars. Rowdy behaviour in these places is largely unknown and there is no expectation that you will drink alcohol there. The Burren is a centre for traditional Irish music, and music can be heard in pubs and bars throughout the year, particularly in the summer months. It is possible to join in traditional Irish dancing locally and students are always welcome at set dancing evenings in nearby Kilfenora. A host of activities are available locally including horse riding, cycling, rock climbing, potholing, amateur dramatics, aerobics, yoga, Gaelic football, soccer, sailing, water skiing, wind surfing, scuba diving, fishing, set dancing, karate and bird watching. As Ballyvaughan is situated at the gateway to the Burren, there are many places of beauty and wonder to see in the area. Maps of walking/ bike trails and points of interest are available in all the local stores and are highly recommended as an essential travellers companion for discovering the Burren. In addition there are books about the Burren and the area in the College Library.
